Is my landlord allowed to contact my physician?

After providing a ESA letter to my landlord. He then called my doctors office to verify the spelling of the Physician and basically did this to see if it was real or not. From what I have read they are never allowed to contact the physician but can ask the ESA owner to have Physician contact land lord. Is this correct and has that been violated? Also is the landlord allowed to require anything else besides a letter ie. Insurance such as renters insurance, animals medical history, proof of flea and tick care, and previous owners information?
