A dog food recall can occur for a variety of reasons. Whether it is the pet food manufacturer or the FDA that has issued the recall, you should know about it. Toxic and harmful substances in your dog’s food can cause life-threatening conditions.

What are Dog Food Recalls?

A recall is an action taken by a company to remove a product from the market. A product recall occurs when there seems to be a fault with the product. In other words, if the dog food can be dangerous when consumed.

The manufacturing company may initiate a dog food recall. Alternatively, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could recall a faulty product.

Dog Food Recall Vitamin D?

Many dog food product recalls, both canned and dry food, are due to elevated vitamin D levels. Too much vitamin D can cause loss of appetite, vomiting, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D toxicity in dogs can cause kidney failure, liver failure, and death.

Is the Recall on Dog Food a Death Sentence for the Brand?

Sometimes the recalled product receives widespread media attention. But often it doesn’t. In that case, sales of those pet food brands do not decline much. For example, Hill’s Pet Nutrition has had several food product recalls. However, their company is still in the top 5 of US pet food manufacturers.

FDA Dog Food Recall vs Voluntary Recall: What’s the Difference?

There are three different types of product recall. A company may decide to elicit a recall of their own volition. On the other hand, a recall can be by FDA request. If the request is not heeded, under statutory authority, the FDA can put in an order for the recall.

What to Do if Your Brand is on a Dog Food Recall List

Stop feeding the food to your dog immediately. It is best to consult with your veterinarian. Even if your pet is not showing any signs of illness.

You should file a complaint with the FDA if you think that your canine has become ill or has died from eating the recalled pet food.

Return the food to the store that you bought it from. You might be able to get a refund. Most importantly, the food must be disposed of in a manner that no other animal can access it.

Recalled Dog Food is Not a Disaster!

Does a dog food recall mean that you must change your dog’s diet? Not necessarily. Perhaps it was just a faulty batch. Or there was a problem with the packaging, and not the food itself. In that case, you could carry on using the same brand and just buy food from a better batch.

However, if you must change to a different diet, be sure to choose something as similar to what your dog has been eating as possible. If you need to make a drastic change, consult with your veterinarian. Giving your pet a probiotic may help their digestive systems cope with the sudden change.

Recalls Happen, but There are Dog Food Brands to Avoid Entirely!

The list of dog food brands to steer well away from can span pages. The key things that dog owners should look for when choosing a diet for their doggo are:

  • Check the protein content of your dog’s food. An animal protein (i.e lean meat) should be the first item on the ingredients list.
  • The food should not contain any artificial flavors, artificial colors, or artificial preservatives. These can all be carcinogenic. Further ingredients to avoid include aflatoxins, heterocyclic amines, and acrylamides.
  • Most dogs fare better on a grain-free diet. Be wary of foods that contain high amounts of wheat and corn.
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables are a far better way for your dog to consume their vitamins. Synthetically manufactured vitamins and amino acids are difficult for your dog to digest. In addition, they can be harmful in the long run.
