Who hasn’t heard of the loyal Poodle breed? Or of the playful Irish Setter? When you mix these two popular breeds you get Irish Doodle puppies, the most adorable furry animals on earth! These designer dogs love being around humans. It appeals to their needy, fun-loving, and goofy sides. For them, a day at the park with their favorite human is a day well spent.

A Short History of Irish Doodles

No, Irish Doodle puppies didn’t get their name because they look like a bad drawing. They got this funny name because they’re an Irish Setter Poodle mix!

Fifty years ago, mutts weren’t very sought after. Sure, they have always made great pets, but you wouldn’t see people spending thousands of dollars on a mutt puppy. Well, times are a-changing!

About thirty years back, breeders started crossing the Standard Poodle with Irish Setters. The result was the cute doggo we see today. Because this cross was made on purpose, we call Doodles designer dogs. This means they’ve been bred with a specific look in mind.

Is This an AKC Breed?

The American Kennel Club (AKC) doesn’t recognize the Irish Doodle as a breed. But passionate breeders and dog lovers all over the world do. They all highlight that the Doodle (sometimes lovingly called The Poo) resembles a hunting dog and a lap dog. That’s because it’s a descendant of gun dogs and companion pups!

Today, you’d be hard-pressed to find a designer dog more loved than the Poo. The Golden Doodle is also popular, but it doesn’t take anything away from the loving Irish mutt.

Best of Both Worlds: Appearance of This Irish Setter Poodle Mix

Like other types of designer dogs, Poos are bred with a certain aesthetic in mind. This is a large- to medium-sized dog covered in wavy, thick fur. Because they’re a mixed breed, they have traits from both Irish Setters and Poodles. That’s why Doodles can either have a square muzzle (like the Setter’s) or a fine and narrow muzzle (like the Poodle’s).

The Coats and Colors of These Doodle Dogs

People often say the Irish Doodle is a hypoallergenic dog. This means their fur doesn’t trigger bad reactions in people with an allergy to dogs. Sadly, that’s not the whole truth, still, these dogs don’t shed too much!

Their coat is long, wavy, and very dense. It almost looks like these pups are wearing fuzzy winter coats! Their fur can be one of seven colors: black, blue, brown, cream, gray, red, and silver.

You need to take care of your Irish Doodle’s coat. These puppers should be brushed daily so their coat doesn’t get matted and full of knots.

Their Average Weight and Size

This Irish Setter mix is a medium-sized dog. On average, male Poos grow to be up to 28 inches tall at the shoulder. Females are a bit smaller, but only by a few inches. They can both weigh up to 75 pounds, which makes them pretty sizeable canine companions!

What About a Mini Irish Doodle?

Dog lovers, rejoice: there are small Irish Doodles, too! Doodle puppies grow to be 15 inches tall at the shoulder and up to 35 pounds heavy when they’re adults. That’s pretty much half of a standard Irish Setter Doodle.

What Is Their Lifespan?

Fortunately, the Irish Setter puppy is a healthy dog and can live for many years. You can expect to have your canine bestie by your side for up to thirteen years. Think of all the adventures you could have together!

Doodles: Dogs with Spunk! Their Temperament and Personality!

The Irish Doodle temperament is a breeze. They’re fun-loving, easy-going, and love humans. Poos are extremely intelligent and learn pretty quickly. No wonder they ace all obedience training competitions and make great therapy dogs! They crave attention and will go above and beyond to put a smile on their owners’ faces. As soon as they see you laughing, they won’t want to stop!

These pups need a lot of socialization, as do all dogs. In order to raise them to be balanced and well-behaved, you need to introduce them to other dogs. Arrange a playdate with a friendly Golden Retriever, for example. Or go for a stroll through a dog park.

Why Doodle Dog Breeds Make the Best ESAs

All the traits of their personality and temperament make it obvious why the Irish Setter is such a brilliant emotional support animal. They are always by their owner’s side, can sense when their owner is sad, and love cheering people up.

If you live your day-to-day with a mental or emotional disability, this is the perfect dog for you. They’ll certainly make brilliant companions.

3 Potential Health Problems to Look Out For!

Even though the Doodle breed is healthy, it still faces some health problems:

  1. Von Willebrand’s Disease
  2. Hip Dysplasia
  3. Progressive Retinal Atrophy

As long as you get your Poo from a reputable breeder and check up on their health regularly, you shouldn’t be too worried. Like we said, Irish Settler Doodles are usually healthy!
