Where can you find dog lovers who know a million and one things about dog breeds? At the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), of course! They handle puppy registration papers, help first-time dog owners understand their pups, and so much more. If you’re looking to buy a purebred dog, the CKC is there to help you!

What Is the Canadian Kennel Club?

The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) is a non-profit organization all about raising happy and healthy purebred dogs. They are the main registry for pups in Canada. Currently, they recognize 175 breeds. Anytime someone claims they have created a new dog breed, the CKC decides whether or not to recognize it.

On top of all that, the Canadian Kennel Club also organizes events. It helps bring together dog lovers and raise awareness for animal health and welfare. It has more than 20.000 members across Canada and incorporates 700 breed clubs. That’s a lot of puppy parents!

A Brief History of the CKC

During the 19th century, dog owners started to pride themselves more on their pets’ looks. They organized dog showings and selectively bred dogs to create new breed standards. This was actually a prestigious activity most noble families devoted time to.

Because these shows were so chaotic, English and French aristocrats decided to create clubs. These became known as “kennel clubs” and grew in popularity. If you were somebody in the mid-1800s, you were part of a kennel club.

Soon, that puppy fever spread to Canada. Thus, in 1888, the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) was created. Over the years, it has only grown. More breeds are recognized nowadays and it has more members than ever before. Plus, they’re so popular that the events they organize are always full!

One Big Pedigree Family: The Continental Kennel Club

You may also have heard of the Continental Kennel Club. A group of dog enthusiasts created it in 1991 and it operates in North America. They provide more or less the same services as the Canadian Kennel Club, but they’re not the same organization.

They, too, let you submit an application to register your dog as pedigree, for example. Moreover, they can help you through the whole registration process. This is especially useful if you want to start your own breeding program and business!

Another thing they do is educate dog owners. Their goal is to raise awareness for all the effort that goes into raising a dog. And for people who have never owned a puppy before, the CKC’s help is invaluable.

CKC vs AKC: What’s the Difference?

The United States also has its own national kennel club. It’s known as the American Kennel Club (AKC). The main difference between the CKC and the AKC is where they’re based. One is in America while the other is in Canada.

Both clubs have similar breed standards, but in some situations, they’re different. This means that a dog with a certain coat color may be recognized as a purebred in Canada but not in the United States, for example.

An interesting difference between AKC and CKC is the number of breeds they each recognize. The Canadian organization recognizes 175 breeds, while the American recognizes 193!

The Purpose of CKC Registration

People love getting purebred dogs for a variety of reasons. More often than not, they buy them from dog breeders directly. But it’s normal to wonder if the dog you’re spending a bunch of money on really is purebred. How can you tell if you’re getting a mutt for a pedigree price tag?

This is where the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) registration comes in. Buying a pup who is registered with CKC assures you they come from a long line of purebreds. Think of it as a buyer’s quality assurance document! This isn’t to say mutts aren’t awesome pets—they are! But when you’re paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars, you want to make sure no one is scamming you.
