How to Care for the Small but Mighty Chiweenie

Reading Time: 4 minutes

ChiweenieA Chiweenie is a sweet little lap dog with a heart of gold.

Also known as the Mexican Hotdog or German Taco, it’s a Dachshund/Chihuahua cross that first became popular in North America in the 1990s.

Despite being short of stature, the Chiweenie is fiercely loyal and will lavish you with heaps of love and affection.

Appearance and Personality of the Adorable Mixed-Breed Chiweenie Dogs

Chiweenies are small with short legs, a long body, and tiny paws. They are friendly, lovable and energetic little dogs.

I mean, sometimes they can be quite an attention seeking (who isn’t?), but they give a lot of love back in return.

Chihuahuas Meets Dachshunds

With either short or floppy ears, a short or long glossy coat and almond-shaped eyes, the Chiweenie is definitely one of the cutest hybrids around.

They can have either a domed head like a Chihuahua or a Dachshund-like pointed snout.

Adaptability of the Chihuahuas and Dachshunds Combined into One

Chiweenies are very adaptable so will be equally happy sleeping on your lap or bouncing around the backyard.

Since they are small dogs they are easily portable and don’t need too much exercise.

En Garde! Chiweenies Make Great Guard Dogs

Guard dogs come in all shapes and sizes.

They may be tiny but Chiweenies can make great lookouts.

As their bark is a bit more than the average pup, this designer dog will usually alert their owners if someone is approaching the house with a few short yaps.

Chiweenie Temperament

Although Chiweenies have adopted certain physical traits from the Daschund, their temperament is more like that of a Chihuahua.

They’re extremely laid-back, energetic, loyal and love to be around people.

However, this Chihuahua mix can be a bit stubborn and sometimes express separation anxiety if they are away from their owners for too long.

Due to the Chiweenie temperament as a penchant for cuddles and extremely affectionate personalities, they make excellent lap dogs.

Who Would Make the Best Chiweenie Owners?

Chiweenies are small and easily transportable.

They’re perfect for people who like to travel and those who live in apartments or condos.

In terms of exercise requirements, this mixed breed isn’t very high maintenance.

A Chiweenie only needs a short daily walk or a run around a backyard, making it an ideal companion for the elderly.

Dachshund Chihuahua mixes get on well with children but since they are small and prone to injury they don’t cope well with rough play or toddlers.

They can also be quite jealous by nature so don’t always get along with other animals. However, if they are introduced as puppies they can learn to adapt and love thy doggy neighbor.

3 Facts You Didn’t Know About Chiweenies

Celebrity Status: Tuna the Chiweenie

Tuna is a 7-year-old Chiweenie and doggy A-lister.

With over 1.9 million followers on Instagram, he’s a funny looking dog who’s captured the hearts of the nation.

Owner Courtney Dasher rescued him in 2010 from a Farmers Market in LA when he was only a 4-month-old puppy.

Due to his wrinkly neck and recessed jawline he has a unique appearance and endearing charm.

Whether the Weather is Hot: The Best Environment for a Chihuahua Dachshund Mix

Chiweenies have a low to moderate activity level and are fine living in either small or large home.

A little frolic in the backyard once a day is all this dog breed really needs.

Since they don’t have very thick coats it’s best to put a coat on your Chiweenie in winter or better still, pop him in your handbag!

Chiweenie Sizes: From Teacup Chiweenie to Full Grown

The Chiweenie breed range from 10 pounds (miniature/teacup Chiweenie) to 24 pounds (standard).

Their size will depend on whether a mini or standard parent dog (Daschund/Chihuahua) was used in the breeding.

Demanding and Smart to Boot: Why These Attention Seekers Need Training

Training the Chiweenie can be a bit of a challenge.

Due to the stubbornness of the dog breed, it’s best to start the process from an early age.

You might have to enlist the help of a professional if you want your Chiweenie to exhibit specific behaviors, for example, toileting in the same place/potty training is not working.

However, positive reinforcement, short sessions, a patient attitude and lots of play will generally ensure that your Chiweenie is happy and well-behaved.

Chiweenie Puppies!

As puppies, Chiweenies are usually born weighing just 2.5 ounces.

They are full of beans so be prepared for lots of time spent playing and chasing them around your home.

Due to their size, it’s best to keep Chiweenies away from small children who can easily hurt them by accident.

  • Seven says:

My chiweenie is almost 4 and her name is Nena. I got her when she was 7 Wells old and she’s been with me every day since. She is absolutely everything to me. She is my world. I have no kids, no family, very few real friends, and I just got divorced after a 7 year marriage, so she is literally all I have and she is literally the reason why I haven’t gone to an extremely dark place in my mind when I’m sad and likely. She is my sweet little done and I don’t know what I would do without her. I love you, Nena.
