More than ever, people consider their pets to be part of the family. They want to feed them quality dog food that meets the dogs’ nutritional needs and helps them thrive. As more and more premium dog food brands have become available, Walmart decided to launch its own brand: Pure Balance. The ingredients are impressive: None of this line’s offerings contain soy or corn, and there are both grain-inclusive and grain-free options.
Pure Balance Dog Food: Ingredients and Nutrition
This line of dog food includes several recipes. Below are the ingredients and nutrition information for one of their dry formulas and one of their canned formulas.
Dry Grain Free Salmon and Pea
Salmon, salmon meal, dried ground peas, tapioca, pea protein, fish meal, dried ground peas, tapioca, pea protein, fish meal, dried plain beet pulp, poultry fat, dried carrots, sunflower oil, natural flavor, whole potato, calcium carbonate salt, flaxseed, potassium chloride, zinc proteinate, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, choline chloride, I-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, niacin, d-calcium panthothenate, I-carnitine, biotin, sodium selenite, vitamin A supplement, riboflavin supplement, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin B12 supplement, calcium iodate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid.
The food is made up of 23% protein, 35% fat, and 42% carbs. When compared to the average dog food, that mix provides a better-than-average protein to fat ratio. It’s good to see salmon and salmon meal among the first ingredients and this formula includes many other quality ingredients such as flaxseed and dried carrots. One ingredient, beet pulp, is controversial. While not harmful in reasonable amounts, it is called cheap filler by some. Others, however, claim its high-fiber content make it beneficial to the dog’s health.
Canned 95% Beef and Chicken
Beef, chicken, beef broth, beef liver, guar gum, cassia gum, carrageenan, tricalcium phosphate, potassium chloride, minerals, choline chloride, inulin, vitamin E supplement, thiamine mononitrate, niacin supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, vitamin A supplement, riboflavin supplement, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, salt.
The canned food doesn’t offer as impressive an analysis as the dry. It’s made of up 27% protein, 66% fat, and 7% carbs. While the food boasts many quality ingredients, the high fat content is something to consider, especially if the pet is overweight. The only questionable ingredient is the carrageenan, which is used to thicken the food. While it’s not a new ingredient, recent studies have called into question its long-term safety. It is also of note that this recipe may have changed recently, so be sure to check labels carefully when purchasing.
