Zignature Dog Food: Dry Food Line

Zignature is a luxury dog food brand that’s manufactured by Pets Global, Inc. Based in North America, which uses all natural ingredients in their luxury dog food line. Zignature products are well known for their lack of animal by-products such as chicken, chicken fat, or chicken eggs. Furthermore, you won’t find any grains, wheat, soy, corn, gluten, or potatoes. Zignature focuses specifically on a low-glycemic diet for canines. Offering both a dry food and canned food line, they have built up a massive fan base of customers who regularly rate the company’s products with five-star reviews.

Nutrient Content

Dogs with allergies or food sensitivities will benefit greatly from Zignature’s limited ingredient dog food. As previously mentioned, most of the food offers a single source of meat protein. Zignature food products are free of chicken eggs, soy, grains, wheat, potatoes, and corn, so you don’t have to worry about food allergies becoming an issue. Zignature dog food is both gluten-free and low glycemic. This makes it the perfect choice for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

Dry Food

Overall, Zignature produces and manufacturers seven grain-free dry recipes.

For this review, we’ll be examining the Zignature Trout and Salmon meal formula.

Zignature Trout and Salmon meal formula: Ingredients

Trout, salmon meal, peas, pea flour, pea protein, flaxseed, chickpeas, dehydrated alfalfa meal, natural flavors, salmon oil, sunflower oil (preserved with citric acid), dried beet pulp, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, salt, chlorine chloride, minerals (zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, cobalt proteinate), vitamins (vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3, vitamin E, niacin, d-calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12), blueberries, carrots, cranberries, calcium iodate, sodium selenite, naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols

Fiber (estimated dry matter content) = 7.2%

Food breakdown

One of the primary ingredients in this premium dog food mix is trout. Trout is well known for its rich content of omega-3 fatty acids. Trout consists of about 80% water. This is important because once the trout is cooked, it loses most of its moisture and the meat loses much of its mass. After having been processed, the trout only makes up just a small portion of the entire premium dog food mix.

The next ingredient is a salmon meal. Salmon meal is considered to be a meat concentrate, and thus contains nearly 300% more protein than found within the fish itself.  Fish meal is typically derived from various fresh fish parts that are captured during commercial fishing operations.

Peas make up the third ingredient. Peas are packed full of carbohydrates and are rich in natural fiber. Keep in mind that peas consist of 25% protein. That fact should be factored in when examining the amount of meat content contained within Zignature brand dog food.

Number four on the list of ingredients is pea flour. This is a powder that’s derived from roasted yellow peas. Pea flour can also contain up to 25% protein, certainly a factor to keep in mind when determining the amount of meat content of Zignature premium dog food.

The fifth ingredient is pea protein. This is what remains of a pea after the starchy part has been removed. Pea protein can contain over 80% protein, though this comes at the cost of peas having a lower biological value than meat. When making a determination of the meat content in this food mix, keep in mind that pea protein can significantly boost the total protein that’s reported on the label.

The sixth ingredient is flaxseed. Flaxseed contains around 19% protein.

Overall, the most controversial ingredients include dehydrated alfalfa meal, pea flour, pea protein, and dried beet pulp.

Canned Food

The canned food Zignature line has seven recipes. We’ll be focusing specifically on the Zignature Lamb Formula.

Zignature Lamb Formula: Ingredients

Lamb, lamb broth, lamb liver, peas, carrots, chickpeas, lamb meal, calcium carbonate, agar-agar, calcium carbonate, choline chloride, salt, suncured alfalfa meal, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, cranberries, blueberries, minerals (zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, sodium selenite, calcium iodate), vitamins (vitamin E supplement, thiamine mononitrate, niacin supplement, calcium pantothenate, biotin, vitamin A supplement, riboflavin supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid)

Fiber (estimated dry matter content) = 5.5%

Food Breakdown

The first ingredient you’ll find in this premium dog food mix is lamb. Lamb is rich in all ten essential amino acids which are important for dogs to live a long and healthy life span. The second ingredient is lamb broth. The broth doesn’t add anything nutritionally, but they add flavor and moisture (this is the reason that broth is commonly added to canned dog food).

The third ingredient is lamb liver. This is a vital component of the overall dog food mix.

The fourth ingredient is peas. Peas are jam-packed with carbohydrates and are rich in natural fiber. Keep in mind, just like with the dry dog food; peas contain around 25% protein.

The fifth ingredient is carrots which are rich in beta-carotene, dietary fiber, and minerals.

The sixth ingredient is chickpeas, AKA garbanzo beans. Chickpeas are rich with fiber and contain around 22% in protein.

The seventh ingredient is lamb meal. Lamb meal contains up to 300% more protein than fresh lamb because it’s a meat concentrate.

Suncured alfalfa meal is considered to be the most controversial ingredient in the Zignature lamb formula.

What People Are Saying

People absolutely love the Zignature brand. After searching on Amazon and various other sites, we could honestly find only a single one-star review. The hundreds of other reviews we looked at were five stars across the board.

“Excellent dog food for dogs with allergies! I switched my dog over to Zignature because of a chronic ear infection, after learning that chronic ear infections in pets are most likely caused by a yeast allergy or potato in the food Zignature is a potato free food! My standard poodles ears cleared up after 2 weeks, and my boston terriers ears are almost heald up!”

–    Jessica B

“This food is AMAZING!! My dogs will only eat this and I always put fish oil on it, they have the softest coats around. My dogs refuse anything else. With only one protein it is great for dogs with allergies. Also has the perfect amount of calories in it!”

–    Rebekah A

“One of our dogs is really sensitive when it comes to food. We tried so many different brands and grain free, but nothing seemed to work until someone mentioned he may be allergic to potatoes. We switched to this food which is grain and potato free and he hasn’t had any issues since. He loves it and so does our other dog.”

  • I have had my dogs on dry lamb kibble a few months now due to one that had allergies, now all 4 of my shih-tzus love it. I also mix can essential limited ingredients with a little rotisoie chicken . No more allergies! Love the fact NO recalls🐾❤

  • My sister-in-law fed my Shepherd ham and cheese during one of the parties held in our home. Since then, I noticed skin allergies on the legs and belly of my dog. She has never been active again even if we resumed with her regular diet. The vet told us to shift to dog food free from allergens, and that’s when we gave her Zignature Lamb variant. The vet was right, and now our little boy is fine.

  • When I was a new doggy owner, I was suspicious of everything my dog ate. My dog is a Labrador, and I got her from my cousin when she was about seven months, and she already had a bad habit of chewing on everything she could get her teeth around (and I mean everything). That’s why I decided she should have the best dog food out there, and for us, it’s Zignature.

  • This is about the only dog food my Bichon can eat. She is allergic to EVERYTHING else. Pea flour is the only ingredient she can tolerate with only duck or turkey. She is allergic to chicken of any kind and any type of flour other than pea. She has been eating this food for at least 5 years, ever since Zignature was introduced to the market. I know it’s a good product since she is thriving.

  • One of our dogs, a spitz, had been very active for the three years she’s been with us, but suddenly became listless since grandma came to our house to visit. Grandma finally admitted she would feed our dogs scraps from the table, like fries and popcorn. The vet was right, our spitz has allergies, and so we fed her Zignature. After just two days, she became her active self again.

  • Not true, my dog is allergic to many of the Zignature proteins. Catfish was a severe reaction. Also Kangaroo. I know of many people who’s dogs do not do well on Zignature.

  • I started my Hooch a Texas Heeler on Zignature and he eats it all🐾 Thank you for a quality product. 🐶

  • started my dogs on the salmon dog food the dry. they never had a problem getting use to it. One of my dogs is very allergic to many things. last year he lost a lot of hair. all of a sudden they are itching a lot any chance it could be the dog food

  • I’d like to know who made the decision to put down our four legged war hero’s? You’d think at some point common sense would come into play and it would not have happened. It’s criminal and a disgrace.

  • My 3 dogs have been on this for a little over a month they eat the Lamb dry food with a scoop of canned either Lamb or Turkey but I was wondering if they will even have dog treats as well I haven’t been able to find any ?

  • I need to amend the true story about Nemo. Some times with the passing years memory fails. Nemo’s handler recovered from his wounds and returned to the U.S with Honors also Nemo returned to Lackland A.F.B. Because of his wounds he was retired with honors and passed away in 1972. Thanks, Robert King

  • I guess you folks never heard about our working dogs in Vietnam. We also had a hero dog named NEMO. He was shot and severely injured and handler killed in Dec. 1966. I was at Lackland at this time and went to Vietnam in January 1967. Well over 4000 dogs served in Vietnam. As the U.S. started withdrawing our troops in late 1971 and early 1972 those numbers fell to as little as 150 dogs. For more than 30 years we wondered what had happened to our dogs. We found out in the late 1990’s that more than 2000 of our faithful warriors were put down. As dog handlers we were outraged and heartbroken. Robby’s law at least in part was forced by those of us who walked dogs in Vietnam. Since that time we have worked to get the recognition and honor due our four footed companions. Through the Nemo project many of us finally w ere able to get our dog’s records. My dog was put down January 25th,1972 as nothing more than a piece of Military equipment. Thank you. Robert King
