Zyrtec for Dogs

Inevitably the seasons change.

Winter brings ice and snow, summer brings the blazing sun, autumn changes the colors of the leaves, and spring causes flowers to bloom. Each season has its pros and cons, but if you suffer from allergies, spring is probably your worst season.

This is when allergy season begins, and humans and dogs alike have to deal with a variety of symptoms that range from runny noses to itchy skin.

Sadly, our four-legged friends tend to get hit by allergies worse than we do. To combat these symptoms, humans and dogs alike turn to a common allergy medication: Zyrtec.

What is Zyrtec?

Zyrtec is an allergy medication that combats your typical allergy symptoms: watery/itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, hives, and itching. Zyrtec works by blocking histamine, a substance that the body produces during an allergic reaction.

You can purchase Zyrtec over the counter, and most dogs are capable of handling this medication without issue. One of Zyrtec’s strongest aspects is that it doesn’t cause the user to feel drowsy after use, unlike most over-the-counter antihistamines such as Benadryl.

Zyrtec for Dogs: Allergies are the WORST!

Have you seen your dog scratching relentlessly throughout the day?

The first thought that typically comes to mind for most dog owners might be fleas. However, if fleas aren’t the source of the problem, there’s a very real possibility that your dog might be dealing with an allergy issue.

Zyrtec, with its active ingredient of cetirizine, is sometimes used to treat dermatitis, a condition that causes a dog’s skin to itch. Nothing is more devastating than watching your poor pup suffering from an allergy condition. Zyrtec for dogs provides a way to alleviate this pain.

Allergy Medicine for Dogs: Why Zyrtec is the Best

As one of the leading antihistamines for allergies, Zyrtec is the best option for your dog because it’s an all natural remedy.

Many traditional over-the-counter medications come with a variety of side effects that can cause long-term issues. This is not the case for Zyrtec, however.

Zyrtec for dogs is also the better choice because of its proven track record against dermatitis. No longer does your dog have to sit there and scratch and whine all day due to itchy skin. Furthermore, the fact that Zyrtec doesn’t make your dog drowsy after use is a huge plus.

OTC Drug: Is Zyrtec Safe for Dogs?

Studies have shown that cetirizine can be tolerated by dogs rather well, but human use has revealed that you should be very careful if your dog has any kidney or liver problems.

If your dog suffers from kidney or liver complications, it may be best to try an alternative treatment such as Omega-3 fish oils, with their omega fatty acids, which reduces itching symptoms in dogs who suffer from atopic dermatitis by 25%.

Cetirizine is the most important ingredient in Zyrtec due to its interaction with the blood-brain barrier, a shield that stops material contained within blood from entering the brain. Only small amounts of certizine make it past this shield, which is the reason that sedation is so rare after using Zyrtec for dogs.

Pregnant dogs are also approved to use Zyrtec.

There have been various studies where pregnant dogs were given a large amount of cetirizine with no visible effects to the fetus. It’s safe to conclude that Zyrtec supplementation during pregnancy is a perfectly safe practice.

When it comes to nursing dogs, a small amount of cetirizine is passed through the milk, so it’s best to avoid treating your nursing pets with Zyrtec.

Check the Box! Zyrtec vs. Zyrtec-D

Just like Zyrtec, Zyrtec-D is an over-the-counter antihistamine that contains cetirizine.

Both medications combat allergies without the side effect of sedation. However, there are differences between the two. As a consumer, always check the box and ensure that you are purchasing the correct version of Zyrtec.

Zyrtec-D differs due to the addition of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride at 120 mg per tablet.

This extra compound is a nasal decongestant that makes it easier for people to breath if they have a stuffy nose.

Pseudoephedrine also narrows the blood vessels in the nasal passages, further relieving sinus pressure.

Zyrtec-D is perfectly fine for human use, but pseudoephedrine is absolutely toxic to your dog!

We can’t stress enough that you should always double check the box before making a purchase.

Some studies have proven that just a couple of tablets of Zyrtec-D can kill a small sized dog. Even if your dog isn’t killed, you may cause irreparable damage. ****Cetirizine should be the only active ingredient.***

Can Dogs Have Zyrtec for Any Kind of Allergy?

Zyrtec for dogs treats a variety of symptoms in our doggos just like it does in humans. These symptoms include:

  • Reactions to poison oak or poison ivy
  • Itchy insect bits
  • Skin allergy symptoms
  • Seasonal allergy symptoms
  • Most situations that involve itchy skin

Does Zyrtec for dogs treat every allergy symptom under the sun? No, but it treats the major ones that cause dogs the most discomfort.

Zyrtec Dosage for Dogs

Knowing the dosage to give your dog is an important aspect of ensuring that your four-legged friend receives the proper amounts of supplementation they need to treat their allergies. Similar to humans, weight plays a significant role in determining how much of the medication you should give your dog.

In fact, it’s the most important factor. Dogs come in a variety of sizes; from Great Danes to Bull Terriers, there are significant size differences between the various breeds.

Simply giving them what you feel is the “proper amount” and waiting around for the results is never advised. Thus, speaking to your vet is the most surefire way to learn the ideal dosage.

Dosage Treatment
0.5 mg/lb every 24 hours Atopic Dermatitis
0.5 mg/lb every 12 hours Allergic Dermatitis

The above table is the suggested dosage of Zyrtec that you should give your dog. However, you should always talk with your vet first before giving your dog any form of Zyrtec. Some veterinarians treat dermatitis with a dose of only 5 – 10 mg for the entire day. Therefore, it’s the smarter choice to follow the advice and expertise of your vet. Zyrtec can be taken before or after a meal.

Liquid Dosage

If you’re looking for a liquid dosage of Zyrtec, it’s unfortunately no longer being made.

If you would prefer to give your dog liquid medicine, Children’s Aller-Tec has a proven track record of relieving allergy symptoms in dogs.

Children’s Aller-Tec contains 1 mg/mL of cetirizine. That means you can administer this medicine to your dog at a dosage of 0.5 mL/lb.

Pet Precaution! What are Common Side Effects of Zyrtec?

Zyrtec for dogs is an overall safe and effective treatment for treating allergies. However, just like every other over-the-counter medication out there, it has a few side effects. The most common of these side effects are vomiting and extreme salivation.

In rare instances, your dog may experience heavy sedation. Most reported cases of sedation had been instances in which smaller dogs were given high amounts of Zyrtec.

Overdosing

The likelyhood of your dog overdosing while using Zyrtec (not Zyrtec-D) is slim.

Test animals were given as much as 220 times more than what’s considered safe for humans, and they were reported as having handled the medication perfectly fine.

However, if you fear that your dog may have overdosed on Zyrtec, you should call your vet ASAP.

If your dog has taken Zyrtec-D, you should rush them to the vet immediately even if they don’t show any signs of distress.

Using Zyrtec for Dogs Safely

If you intend on using Zyrtec to treat your dog’s allergy symptoms, you should follow these rules thoroughly. Note that these guidelines serve as a rehash of what has already been discussed:

  • Always speak to your vet before giving your dog Zyrtec
  • Use extreme caution when giving a dog Zyrtec who suffers from kidney or liver disease, though it would be best not to give them the medication at all
  • Natural remedies such as Omega-3 is an excellent alternative if Zyrtec is out of the question for your dog
  • Cetirizine should be the only active ingredient

Zyrtec should never be used in combination with other types of medication that depress the central nervous system, as this will result in possible heavy sedation. The medications to be avoided are Ativan, alprazolam, and diazepam amongst others.
